AS - Final task (Double spread explanation 4)

I also added a quote taken from the interview in between the text and a rapid fire round at the end to intrigue the readers and to keep their attention till the very last word.
I also added personal details of the artist in the 'Know him better' box.

AS - Final task (Double spread explanation 3)

My magazine images are on the right.
I also decided to add a same color drop cap after looking at various double spread pages and seeing that almost all had a drop cap to show where to start reading from.
A small intro was also written by me to give a brief overview of the interviewer and the artist.

AS - Final task (Double spread explanation 2)

I was going through various magazines online when this double spread page quickly caught my eye. After opening the image, I realised they had used a clipping mask instead of a normal page heading. We have been taught how to use clipping masks in class before and this magazine gave me the idea to use it as my heading with my artist's name.
Hence, I mixed together his pictures which I took for my magazine and used them to create a clipping mask which is different from the one image clipping mask in the 'A poet' life' heading.
I only used images here and did not add more in the double spread page unlike the original which has nother image at the bottom left.

AS - Final task (Double spread explanation 1)

My double spread page which I will be explaining in parts in the following posts.

AS - Final task (Contents explanation 3)

The page heading of my contents page is written in red font on top of a black rectangle to make it stand out more. Below it the issue number and month of it's release is also written, however it is written in a generally smaller font size.
I used a gradient as my background instead of going with a solid color because I believed it made my contents page look more alive.

AS - Final task (Contents explanation 2)

After looking at various content pages, I decided I wanted my contents & pictures completely and perfectly aligned at opposite corners of the page to give it a more finished and polished look. Below are few comparisons. The ones on the left are mine and the ones on the right are from 2 different magazines Q and one another (I tried finding the name how ever was unsuccessful).
Also I have a hint of who the pictures were of by writing their names (Made up) in the color white (to stand out more) and then numbered them also in white. I made sure that no page numbers clashed and so all of them are different and carefully thought over.
I divided my contents into two parts 'Features' and 'Regulars'.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 8)

I looked at various covers and then decided to stick to a set of font styles and colors instead of making it all different. Which is why I only used mostly 2 font styles and the colors white and red. I chose white and red because my image is black and white hence those colors were more visible and were standing out more.
Red is also the color of passion, lust, blood etc whereas white stands for purity. Using color psychology I decided that this combination was the best and it also suited my rock genre.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 7)

When I decided to take a low key image for my cover, I google-d various pictures and these two were the ones which attracted me the most. With my limited resources I tried my best to achieve such an effect using only one speed light.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 6)

The footer from Bass Magazine gave me an idea of adding various (make believe) artists names on the cover to make it more interesting.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 5)

My footer says 'Top 101 bands of the 21st century'. Initially I wrote 100 bands, but then decided to write 101 since 99 or 101 always looks more intriguing than 100. Also 21st century means that the list will include the BEST bands over time hence people which like old rock or the new bands. All sorts of people will be interested.
My other cover lines include things which should attract the youth, again which is my target audience to pick up the magazine and go through it. Specially people who are interested in music generally.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 4)

This is the 'splash'. I wanted to add an incentive for the reader when he buys the magazine which is why I added the cover line 'In it to win it!?'. I added a tilt to the whole cover line to add a bit more of variety in my cover since all of my cover lines are straight.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 3)

The inspiration for my Masthead came from the magazine Classic Rock. Their masthead is standardized with the main model's head mostly overlapping the masthead. After looking at various other magazines I decided this is what will help me best in achieving the cover I had in mind. Which is why I wrote my masthead in Photoshop and then imported the PSD into InDesign and then through the links tool I moved the image and masthead around to accommodate both. Initially the masked image was bigger than this and it was covering almost all of the masthead. I resized it later, so that the reader knows what the name of the magazine is.

AS - Final task (Cover explanation 2)

I added quotes of make believe artists to make the cover look more interesting. The quotes are things which the youth (target audience) would be more interested in, related to rehab, losing hope etc.

I also added images of real artists which I took at various concerts. The first one if of the lead singer of the band Roxen (concert held at our own school), the middle one if of Ali Azmat's band (concert held at Lahore University of Management Sciences) and the last one is of the guitarist of SYMT the band (concert again held at our school).
The reason for adding these pictures was to increase the readers interest at the first glance. Generally people don't want to waste time going through the whole magazine, deciding whether to buy it or not. Which is why I added small pictures of the contents on the cover to intrigue the reader.

My final cover page. I will explain it further in parts.

AS - Preliminary Task. (Contents explanation 5)

I used the same shades of orange and white that I used in my cover page here. I used guides in order to make the numbers more symmetrically instead of just adding them haphazardly. Initially I had decided to add my numbers in 50% opaque circles (Ellipse tool), however I decided it looked too childish so I just typed them simply.
I used the same contents as mentioned in my cover page and tried my best to make them as interesting as possible to my age group for e,g Making money, band interviews, apps etc.

AS - Preliminary Task. (Contents explanation 4)

I then numbered my contents page 1 and made a polygonal shape in a brighter shade of orange. I also applied the effects of Bevel and Emboss to make it look more 3-D and then a drop shadow.

AS - Preliminary Task. (Contents explanation 3)

I then added my pictures to the opposite end of the page. They weren't all the same size at first so instead of applying the same sized crop to them I added two rectangles of the same base color to two more layers and then moved those particular layers above from the 3 layers on which the pictures were kept.
When doing my final task I will make it a point to keep the size of my pictures uniform when initially post-processing them.

AS - Preliminary Task. (Contents explanation 2)

Then I started to write my text 'Contents' on the side of the page in a font depicting Autumn. My inspiration for this is attached below. However I added my own twist to it and instead of rotating the text I typed it simply vertically.

AS - Preliminary Task. (Contents explanation 1)

I kept the base color uniform throughout both of my pages for the magazine because I like it when magazines are uniform and tend to stick to one color scheme. I also used the same colors for my text.
